Children of the Grave is probably my fave Black Sabbath song ever, though this record is fantastic.

I wore those MoR and Vol IV records out.
My 3 fave songs are Void, Supernaut, and Tomorrow's Dream. The needle got lifted and dropped on those 3 a lot when I was a kid. That was kind of the OG version of repeat song.

Vol4 was all about Under the Sun and Cornucopia for me. Outstanding, crushing heaviness.

Yes. Those wall of sound songs just crush. To me it still sounds heavier than anything that's come along since. Maybe someone like Pantera hits me the same way, but for opposite reasons. Or sometimes I'll hear a certain Soundgarden part that delivers that kidney punch, but not like Sabbath.
I think the vintage-ness of Sabbath just adds to the heavy. Their unperfect timing, production, odd tunings (a lot of those songs are obviously not to pitch), whatever. The formula back then was perfect, particularly on 3 and 4. IMO the sound changed for the worse on SBS, but the songs are still killer.

It always seemed to me that Sabotage should have come out been between Vol4 and SBS, sound and heaviness-wise. I really like Sabotage (prob tied with Vol4 and the first one for fav, if I have to pick) - not sure why it's not held with higher regard amongst many Sabbath fans.

I like Walt's choices.. I think Vol 4 *might* be my favorite because its got a lot of variation.. Like Tomorrows Dream is just pure straight up Sabbath, Snowblind too.. Then Wheels of Confusion(which is a fave of mine) is this out of left felt vibe.. Same with St.Vitus Dance.. List goes on.. I think Vol IV just held up over time better for me.. Plus Laguna Sunrise was basically Iommi's perfect acoustic song.. Which he always managed to do some real cool stuff on the acoustic numbers..

Sabotage and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath are my favorites. I can't really listen to one without the other.

Lots of good material on those two, although I definitely like Sabotage more.

I remember reading that a lot of the changes to the sound, songwriting, etc. being brought by Iommi during the time of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath were a direct result of his being influenced by Brian May, which I can definitely tell. Overall, the songs were a little less heavy and dark (although that middle section of the SBS title track is pure :rawk: ), and the songwriting / arrangements much more complex.

I also remember hearing in an interview how they rented some old castle to record those albums in, and they were staying there until they basically scared the crap outta themselves and had to move into a local hotel

Yeah, I'm not sure how many Sabbath fans you know, but i can't think of one i know who doesn't like Sabotage. Hole in the sky, symptom of the universe, megalomania, song 5( lol, can't think of the name all rule). I think the Writ is a bit overrated, but bad ass nonetheless. Definitely great album. I'd even put it above Sabbath Bloody Sabbath(on some days, cause that s got some all time trax om it. but as a whole It just lacks some of the variety that Sabbath could bring on albums like Vol 4, The first one and paranoid. Sabotage feels a bit like Masters of Reality. Great album, but kinda all steered in one Direction.

I think most Sabbath fans don't like Never Say die. I always loved.can't ever say it's their best. The guitars sound terrible, and they may have tried to be too technical at times, but there's still some masterful moments. The only album i will almost never listento is Technical ecstasy. I've learned to like it more than i used to, but that's the one Ozzy album that missed the mark for me

Probably more that it's never talked about than anything, I guess. Those are great songs on there, for sure.

I was first exposed to Sabbath around '81/82 by a friend who told me that I needed to check them out after he heard I liked Ozzy. Only album he had to play for me was We Sold Our Souls For Rock & Roll, and I couldn't believe the guy (who's voice I TOTALLY dug - fuck off, Dave :D ) that sang Flying High Again and Crazy Train was the same one that sang on Black Sabbath, The Wizard, and the rest from the first album

Shit got real for me when War Pigs and especially Paranoid came on. The sound of those songs (and the rest from the Paranoid album) completely locked me in, and I've never stopped loving them. I started buying up various Sabbath albums 1 and 2 at a time, taking a month or two to digest them, and then getting more. I think I started with Paranoid, Mob Rules (which was new at the time), Master of Reality, and the first album. Then on to Heaven & Hell, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and Sabotage. Towards the end, I was really wanting the 'newness' to last, so I slowed way back. First was the disappointment of Never Say Die (although I always dug the title track). When I finally got around to Technical Ecstasy, I knew there was a reason nobody ever talked about that album. Seemed pure, utter shite at the time, and it took me a long time to even bother with it again. I do think there's some good spots on those albums (I particularly like the stuff with Ward singing), but you're right - sound was nothing like the first albums.

What really sucks for me is that I still wasn't going to concerts at that point (that didn't come until '83 or '84), so I totally missed seeing Ozzy / Rhoads and Sabbath / Dio.

Sabbath is for sure one of the best bands ever. And Tomy Iommi is such a bad ass. Gets fingers cut off and proceeds to basically invent Metal.

If you aren't down with Sabbath, may I suggest some Wham or Flock of Seagulls.
