Lovin' the Deftones

Post by Orbis_Ignis »

I never really paid attention to them until I bought their new CD, Koi No Yokan. I 'd it so much I've bought Diamond Eyes, White Pony, and Around the Fur. Any other must-haves in their discography? \m/

Amp and Cab Bugera 1990 or 1960 into an Orange 2x12 w/Heritage G12M's or Peavy 2x12 w/Seventy 80's
FX: the pedals I build

You've got the must-haves already. I really like Saturday Night Wrist, but many felt it was a weaker album. Their debut Adrenaline was great at the time but maybe hasn't aged so well. Their self-titled is widely regarded as their weakest, there are only one or two tracks I can dig.

Adrenaline would complete the essential deftones collection for you imo.

This. It is a great album though.

Also, I bought the family values tour dvd and I was VERY disappointed in that particular gig -I wasn't there haha- but I was like... damn all the other artists were pretty much on the ball but deftones were awful.

I NEED to listen to the new album!

Great point about Adrenaline not aging well. Could be the fact I'm not as young and angry as I used to be, but during that time it was a great debut record to dig in.

Around The Fur is definitely my fave.

White Pony is probably my fave. Most diverse disc they put out imo; though the new one is very good. Around the Fur is the best of their "heavy" discs I would say.

As far as live goes, I have always thought Chino has sucked in every clip I have watched. Guitar tone has always been very sloppy and uninspiring as well. On cd, however; they are amazing in my book.

What killed it for me was Chino was screaming shove it shove it shove it while the bassist (or guitarist... it has been a while since I watched it) is just shouting into the mic 'goo! Shovee! The sunn! Aside!'. Frakin' lame.

I don't think it is how Adrenaline has aged but more so how later releases were so much better composed. But when I am in an angry or pumped up mood, I listen to Adrenaline from start to finish.

How they rate for me:
Around the Fur
Diamond Eyes tied with White Pony
Koi No Yokan
Adrenaline

Forget the others, SNW and self titled...in my collection but no desire to listen much (heck I even listened to CMs Team Sleep effort more than these two combined)

I've only seen them live at Reading a few years ago and didn't think much of it, though they suffered from Reading festival's famous "Fucking Terrible Sound". Older live clips seem very sloppy but I think in the last couple of years they've been much better, tighter. I don't mean any disrespect to Chi, but since they got that other bassist in they seem to have become a much better live unit.

Last response:

I saw a couple of live clips of the bassist doing the 'go shove the sun aside' and Chino just screeching shove it... they were awful. Ahh man.

1. You said that a month ago.
2. You mean like how the song actually is on the record? :idk:

Well, that's how it IS in the record. Chi screams 'go shove the sun aside' slowly and Chino screams 'shove it' a bunch. :cop: It sounds like you're hating on it live in particular, like they did it in a different way or something, but that's how the song is on the record too. :idk:

I think White Pony is probably their best album, but honestly I probably listen to Adrenaline more.

I only own the first 3 records. Didn't really like what I heard from the next 2 and so stopped paying attention. They were streaming Koi No Yokan somewhere a while ago and I gave it a few spins. It was alright, but didn't really grab me either.

Great live band in my experience. I'd totally go to see them again if they toured near me.

Nah, you are reading WAY to much into it

I just wasn't keen on the clips/ performance I saw. Nothing more nothing less.
