UAD Soundmachine WoodWorks plugin: Wow!

Post by Loop Bizkit »

So...shameless product plug here.

I was messing around today with my acoustic. I play acoustic probably 10 times more frequently than electric, but record acoustic probably 10% as often as electric... I hate mic'ing things up and going through all of the hassle. I usually just want to record quick.

So, I plugged in my Martin directly to the interface, and recorded the guitar straight from it's internal fishman pickup. Not ideal, obviously. Or usable, TBH...

Then I slapped the WoodWorks plugin on, and BAM... got all of the body and harmonic stuff back, to the point where it's darn near good enough, if not good enough.

I just wrote a little slap/tap Candyrat style thing... here you be:

I definitely would have thought this was at least a blend of a microphone and a piezo. It sounds really good. I have been using acoustic IR's for a few years with my acoustics when playing live, but this plug-in puts those to shame. Beautiful.

Thanks man!

To be fair, it's not JUST the UA plug... I added some reverb, and compressed the guitar a lot too, to even out the performance a bit... but the tone is pretty much all UA.

That whole style of playing mystified me until I realized the guitars were HEAVILY compressed. Like, Mike Dawes, Andy McKee, etc.. they're doing all of this tapping, harmonic slaps, etc, while finger picking... and each technique, uncompressed, is wildly louder/quieter than the others. You really have to squash a lot to get things even.

Ready for a laugh?

That's the SD3 Djent Kit.

It gets really polite when you pull back the snare velocity. :)

That's straight off the Fishman? Sounds gorgeous and I'd have never known that wasn't mic'd.

This seems like the acoustic version of using IRs and I'm all for it.
