Best pre-tube preamp.

Post by mtm105 »

My experience goes back to owning 3 different TubeWorks. Fine reputation.

My fav is Tonebone Hot Brit. The original. Can be found used $100 range. Back in the day it was the greatest endorsed by many. Hasn’t changed, IMO. If it works, why fix?

Th new Friedman IR looks very tasty. I have a Benson preamp I am selling to possibly put $$ towards.

Are you talking about preamp pedals or any tube preamp?

If it's pedals....Koch has some great ones '63 OD, Super Lead, Pedaltone. Hughes and Kettner had a great one called the Tubeman Plus.
Mesa had the V-Twin. AMT has a bunch of them. The Friedman IR-X seems great but I haven't played one yet.

Then there are the rack preamps and there are a huge amount of great units, depending on what you want. MP1, TriAxis, JMP1, ENZGL530 etc
Guitars:
'78 Les Paul Pro / '89 SG Special/ '04 Gibson Les Paul Classic 3 pickup / Jackson Star/ Endres Tele / Fernandes Rhoads/ ''74 Hohner MIJ strat/ 2 Partscasters

Amps:
Depends on when you ask. I got tired of constantly updating this section lol

Cabs
Marshall 1960A w V30s/ Seismic 2x12 w Redback and V30.

The current boogie line has ir’s DI’s load and attenuation. So for the pre part of it they are cutting edge and sound great.

I only have one pedal that actually has tubes in it is my Correct Sound Custom, Sunn Beta/Model T Preamp Pedal.
If you're into Sunn amps, it's a fairly inexpensive way to get close to the tone.

For tone Mesa/Boogie Triaxis but the controls on a lot of them are dying and there are few replacements.

Pedal Format it has to the the new Friedman IR-X. Debating about picking one up for a pedal board rig.
