Anybody else like Metallica and Megadeth equally?
I only understood the hate and jealousy for one or the other when I was young and stupid.
I think the world is a better place with both bands.
Plus, it's an absolute anomaly that two supreme visionaries ended up in the same band, and both ended up being multiplatinum legends. Like lightning striking twice.
Getting kicked out gave Dave what he needed to be a legend.
Just awesome going back and listening to either band in the 80's or 90's.

As a kid I liked Metallica a lot and never listened to Megadeth (not because I didn't like them or anything; just literally never listened to them)
These days it's the opposite

Well, yeah, I'll always like Megadeth a little bit more because they were the underdog, and they had Marty Friedman. And almost no wah. I modeled much of my early playing on Mave. His ear for harmony resonated with me.

If you didn't live through it in the '80s, it was definitely factionalized. As stupid and comical as it was, I always loved both bands. But I do think that Megadeth at their peak made better music than Metallica at theirs.

Where I grew up? You listened to both or neither. I don't recall anybody getting bent about somebody being into one or the other more.
Back then I'd be hard pressed to say which I liked more. Big four, Exodus, Testament, Nuclear Assault, Overkill, shit, this could take a while. They all kinda had a pull for me at the same rate. Through time, most of them have managed to disappoint in one way or another, but back in the day? All of them or none.
At least in my part of the country.
And I agree with TurboPablo. Megadeth at peak > Metallica at peak. Though I still probably played more Metallica on guitar.

Yeah when they both were going strong, it was pretty equal.

Re: Anybody else like Metallica and Megadeth equally?
I pretty much gobbled up all metal as a kid, so I had everything released by both bands (minus soundtrack releases).
I always felt that Metallica had what it took to really solidify them, whereas Megadeth always seemed to just push and push. This was before the internet and everything was either TV or magazines.
Nowadays, I listen to both with maybe Megadeth inching out Metallica, but that's because my tastes shift.

"Master of Puppets" and "Peace Sells" came out during my Freshman year of college and both blew my mind. They both have tons of crap albums but the ones that hit me HARD.
Mave is total bitch though. BTW have you heard that he used to be in Metallica? I think I read something about that the other day.

Re: Anybody else like Metallica and Megadeth equally?
I grew up with Metallica because they were everywhere and my cousin introduced me to Battery, but Megadeth wasn't really on my radar. I had no clue about the drama until years after the internet became a thing, but I guess it'd already factionalized as the Megadeth kids weren't my crowd.
That said, I wasn't a metalhead and was more on the punk side of things, and I lived in a small town with no cable TV, so I had a tendency to learn about bands 2-3 years after everyone else did.

I'm not so sure about listening to either anymore in 2023
I never really went very deep into megadeth. Earlier this year I saw a megadeth tribute open for a friends band (begrudgingly at first. I was thinking "megadeth tribute? hell no lets show up late") but they actually were really fucking good and made me realize that I should probably dive into the early discography more. Which I still havent done

Only listen Peace Sells, Rust in Peace, and Dystopia. Definitely their 3 best.

I couldn't get into Dystopia, but Endgame was a solid effort to my ears. Also, So Far, So Good, So What has some awesome tracks too. I think I really enjoy the tone on that album lol

Re: Anybody else like Metallica and Megadeth equally?
I started attention to Megadeth when Marty Friedman joined them. So I like the Friedman era albums quite a bit. Then I completely lost track of them. I don't think I've even heard the other albums tbh. Until Kiko joined them. I've known him for a long time so I started to follow them again and Kiko is doing a great job.
Metallica, I've always liked them , I think the only album I did not like was St Anger (and Lulu but I don't consider it a Metallica album). I see them as 2 bands though, a metal band until And Justice.. and a hard rock band from the Black Album and up.. but I like hard rock so
What I don't like is Fractallica and Cortexdeth. Bring your amps live you lazy pieces of shit.

Yet Anthrax and Testament, who use Kempers, get a pass?

Nope. Also shitty.
Although I think Scott Ian uses the EVH amps though, that'd keep the mix heavy.
I haven't seen either band live in decades tbh so I actually don’t know what they sound like live nowadays.

I preferred Metallica for a while and then Megadeth. I’ve grown to view them equally meh over the years.

I feel like a lot of metalheads go through a phase where it's not cool to like Metallica anymore, and wearing a Megadeth shirt is how they signal to other metalheads that they're an enlightened connoisseur of troo metal.

I hate Mave's voice so I have never liked Megadeth. He sounds like a whiny angry angsty ginger kid. That said, he's pretty based these days so I probably like him more as a person.
Burned myself out on Metallica. The new resurgence of Metallica nostalgia annoys me.

Re: Anybody else like Metallica and Megadeth equally?
I got into Metallica early on but had a few friends turn me onto Megadeth. I’ve always liked both but really gained an appreciation for Megadeth in my 20s after seeing them supporting System Has Failed and United Ablminations. Been a huge fan since. Mave is always gonna be Mave so if you don’t like him then you never will. But I dig both.
As for using modelers and shit live, these bands have the budgets and stage real estate to use real fucking amps and they should. So should Testament for that matter. Last time I saw them, they opened for Megadeth and Slayer on their 20 year anniversary tour for Rust and Seasons, respectively. Alex had DSLs and maybe a Mode Four live and Eric Peterson was using EVH 5150IIIs and they sounded awesome. Megadeth was using JVMs and Slayer was using the same 800s they always used and sounded beastly. Any time I saw Slayer live, aside from having a mix that cut, their audio and mix was very aggressive. Which was fucking great.

I remember some guys holding Megadeth as the favorite and other guys holding Metallica as favorite, but no friction over it. I can even think of the particular schoolmates I had that favored one or the other. Metallica held a slim majority among my friends but all of 'em loved both.

One of the big things I loved about early Metallica and Megadeth was that they chose to be original about their song formats and made them long and winding.
