About to go down the reaper rabbit hole
I don't know why, my friend is talking me in to it. Mainly just to record the live jams that we do. So I'm about to call my friendly Sweetwater rep and get the Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 3rd Gen and a pair of JBL 306P MkII 6.5 inch Powered Studio Monitors. The good news is my buddy knows Reaper well enough, so there's that. Wish me luck, I'm sure I'll be doing this a lot.

Supermassive & SpaceModulator are totally useful and fun.
I just posted YT video about those this morning. It's a pretty processed sound but it's a damn cool one.

If you're going to record with a mic, the Rode NT1-A is an excellent, all around mic for $199. It covers 20-20kHz and it comes with a shock mount.

You can download a free compressor plugin from Tokyo Dawn... it will come in handy for vocals, bass and anything with fluctuating volume that needs taming, including recording band practice.

The free, D16 compressor form Group Audio is easier to use...

Everyone needs the Flatulus plugin... check out the clips here:

Just watch this guys videos. If he doesn't have a video on the subject it probably isn't something Reaper can do. http://www.kennymania.com/reaper-videos/
I also suggest opening Reaper up and get your IN's and Out's configured and then just drag and drop some loops or even whole songs right into it. Then it will automagically create the tracks and you can start messing around. Reaper is so easy and fun once you get going. Reach out if you get stuck.
P.S. Reaper can pretty much do anything and everything and don't buy any plugins (VST's) or anything until you mess with the free ones included with Reaper. Reap on!
