Some facts about modern music history that are mind blowing

Post by GuitarBilly »

...well to me at least. It's crazy the pace rock music evolved from 60's to say early 90s.

For starters:
First Beatles album.. 1963
First Hendrix album 1967

Only 3 and a half years from these 2 albums and what a quantum leap in sound!!

Further, Hendrix entire career also only lasted 3 and 1/2 years!! All the impact he made on music occurred in 38 months.

To keep it going, the time distance between Jimi last album and VH first album is only 8 years. Imagine that big of jump say from 2014 to now. That is how fast that went.

Another cool one, the time lapse between what was arguably the very first metal album, (Black Sabbath) and Metallica's Kill Em All is only 13 years. Not even 2 decades and that's another quantum leap.

Even crazier, Metallica's Kill em All and The Beatles 1st album are only 20 years apart. That's it! In todays terms that would be from 02 to now. Nearly nothing!!

These days, most records from '02 could have been released today. Very little difference. If you go back 10 years, pfft they're pretty much still called "new" music.

Isn't it crazy the pace the late 1900's evolved in terms of music and how it has massively slowed down now?

Hendrix was as prolific as anybody. The Man WAS music. It coursed through his veins. The space between he and EVH was filled with some of the greatest guitar based music in history. It really is mind blowing.

Imagine if they had a chance to jam in the late 1970s'. With Jimi's blues and Eddies swing, it would have been so epic. Jimi would have been in his 30s' and ripping so hard.

I've recently decided Hair Metal didn't age as well as I thought it did. I mean, there are some highlights, but boy was there some shit shit back then. The Sirius hair metal channel manages to only play garbage.

Metallica was badass back in the day.

The first round of grunge was badass too.

Btw, fuck the violent femmes. Blister in the sun is the worst song ever written.

Oddly, I decided 80's hard rock is pretty much all what I am going to play from now on  I grew up with that music and if I am being perfectly honest with myself, it's what I like to play. Thankfully my wife and musical partner also loves this music (not to mention she loves glitter  ) even though she is much younger than me, so that is what we are going to do.

Sirius is the problem though, they really don't play anything but the played out stuff that most people seem to be sick of, but apparently can't get enough of either.

I've been listening to a lot of the newer Scandinavian bands that are doing 80's style hard rock and I love it. H.E.A.T. , Nestor etc... It's the most excited I've been about "new" music since the 80s..

Not to say I don't like other stuff, I love all kids of different stuff, but 80's rock is why I wanted to play guitar to begin with. Took me forever to realize that is what I should be doing and not following trends, especially since I don't do it for a living.

Another fact that blows my mind is that The Beatles recording career only lasted 7 years - and they only toured for 4 of those 7 years. Incredible to have that much long lasting impact from such a short career (as a band).

That Josh dude from JHS made the comment that in the 60's music went from I Wanna Hold Your Hand pretty much directly into stuff like Hey Joe and Purple Haze.

That's a pretty far moonshot eh?

Yes! It is!! That is what blows my mind!! You'd think they were completely different eras of music but they were only a little over 3 years apart!

It’s interesting and cool for sure. But not too surprising when you understand ALL the bands and people you mentioned cut their teeth playing playing 6-7 nights a week. 3-4 sets a night for years honing in their chops.

I can relate on an extremely limited level but whenever I would go to Germany to write, rehearse and record an EP in a months time cause that’s all the time I could afford away from home (with a family and business) we would play 7 days a week hours on end. And when is come home after that time it was almost embarrassing how much better my chops and playing were compared to my “everyday” playing where I thought I was pretty good. Lol. Even the few little tours I did, just playing full energy/effort shows for a week would make my playing chops go to another level that simply doesn’t happen in the same way otherwise. Even tho I know there a billion guitarists these days who seemingly learn off YouTube in their bedrooms and become shredders, I still fully think true musicianship hits top peak when playing as much as those early dudes were. And for the most part, no one is learnging the ropes in that same way anymore. Which I think would explain some of the stagnation besides technology and social media homogenizing everything

Tomorrow never knows is one of the Heaviest tunes ever recorded and Jimi has often quoted it live.
“Our virtues and our failings are inseparable, like force and matter. When they separate, man is no more”
― Nikola Tesla

“I cannot be arsed with this right now”
― MISTER NOBODY™

"Stand up for what you believe in even if you are standing alone"
― Sophie Scholl

I've always thought it was crazy how much music Hendrix pumped out in those few years, and even the Beatles didn't really record that long. In that short span, both had such a huge impact on music and the way music was recorded. And both still continue to influence.

Gat damn excellent shit Bill. One of the reasons I missed this place.
I do the time thing too. I think man, music hasn't changed near as much in the last 30 years as it had the prior 30 years. Dirt came out about exactly 30 years ago. Think about what was out in September of 1962. Holy fuck.

That's exactly it man. Dirt could very well be a modern album. But if you look 30 years back to '62... that's an entirely different world. The 60-90s era were hyperspeed for music development.
