Incoming 8" Monitors

Post by GuitarBilly »

I've been really happy with my JBL 305s but I noticed I struggle a bit to hear the low end. Stuff that sounds fine here sounds woofy when I test the mix in my car. So I just got a pair of 308s! Basically the same monitors just 8" instead of 5". This is actually the first time I will own 8" studio monitors so I am excited about it
Guitars:

Depends on when you ask. I got tired of constantly updating this section lol

Cabs
Marshall 1960A w V30s/ Seismic 2x12 w Redback and V30.

oh nice! yeah-- i struggled with 5's for a while, and i could never get a handle on what kick and bass were actually doing. it makes a difference having an extra octave down there!

oh... 8s..... nice..... I have no problems with the 6" JBLs.... it's kinda crazy how much the difference between the 6 and 5 inch models as far as low end goes, I'm sure the 8" will be even better.... the ONLY thing I don't like about the JBLs is that they are rear ported so you're forced to keep them off you wall

Check out Sonarwork Reference software. It made a world of difference in my mixing. Especially in the lows.

Cool, i'm curious how they work out. I'd imagine it could be a significant upgrade.

I have rockit 5 g3's as primary studio monitors and some older computer (harmon karmon) speakers as secondary speakers hooked up to the same audio interface. When i upgraded to the g3 krk's some years back at 1st considered larger speakers but all in all been happy with these.

It's definitely an upgrade but in a roundabout way. Some of the mixes that sounded fine on my 305s didn't sound very good on the 308's. Aside from the bigger size and extended low end, these speakers are flatter than the 305s. The 305s had a bit of a midrange bump that made things sound sweeter especially guitar tones.
So these new speakers actually made my tracks sound worse and forced me to review some of my mixes, which is what I wanted at the end of the day.

Yes, I am. It made a huge difference in my studio. I am working on a new record now and I will be posting stuff soon. But I can hear the low end WAY better now than I ever did with the 305s. I won't be going back to smaller speakers anymore.
